FUBAR: When It Absolutely Has to Be Destroyed

I can’t believe I’ve been an “official” houseblogger for nearly two months and I’m just now discovering Charles & Hudson. With shame, I admit that.

To steal a phrase, “They had me at hello.” It wasn’t enough that they linked to This D*mn House earlier this week. Oh no. Previously, they happened to have written about the best li'l tools to have when you want to tear the hell out of something! Or, the "Top Five Tools Of Mass Destruction," as they have dubbed them. Their list leads off with something I'm waaaay familiar with: a 14-pound sledgehammer. There's been some serious demo going on around here, as you know.

The article also points out a tool I think I have to own: the Stanley FuBar Utility Bar. (Gotta love a tool that has its own freakin’ Web site.) I’m thinking that the FUBAR would live up to its name. So, I guess I have to find out if Amazon has one of these, now that they have sent me yet another tool-related email …

If you like hearing about interesting new tools, Toolmonger.com is a great blog. They featured the FuBar a while back.

Ok, do they really know what fubar stands for? 'Cause they're pretty seriously tough sounding on the FuBar website. I laughed everytime he said "fubar" in that tough sounding voice. Are they trying to be subversively funny? 'Cause that would be funny. It'd be even funnier if they don't know what they're referencing...

Gene -- Thanks! I'll have to check that out. I love tools, probably at an abnormal level.

V -- I think they know. That made me love it all the more. :-)

I love the FuBar. Not sure I'll actually be buying one, but I love it anyway. Can't wait to show Bob, who just loaned me his Stanley Wonder Bar, thereby making my life sooooo much easier. (And by the way, FUBAR is one of our fave acronyms around the station, along with its lesser-known cousin BOHICA.)

Okay, now that I read notsosahm's comment, I'm wondering if I have a different understanding of the acronym....I use it in the US Army sense, which made the FuBar ad really funny to me; i.e., anything you hit with the FuBar really would be [bleeped] up beyond all recognition.

That just ROCKS! I love that tool. If I had something I needed to demolish, I might have to have one of those. Quite entertaining on a Friday morning!

That's the definition I understand it to have, Jayne...the sanitized version being 'Fouled' Up Beyond All Recognition. In computer science, it's pretty common when writing a code sample to use variable names like, foobar, foo and bar. And of course, FUBAR's cousin, SNAFU.

Jayne -- I've always loved FUBAR as an acronym and I think I'd love it as a tool, too! You gotta let me in on BOHICA though. :-)

I always understood FUBAR as = f'd up beyond all repair.

Shall I embarrass myself about tools? Tony said he might want a circular saw for Xmas last year and I said "what on earth do we have around here that needs to be cut in circles?".

Yeah, I KNOW.
