Turning Back

Even though I’ve known this for months, it occurred to me with a renewed sense of urgency that this weekend is when we turn the clocks back. Don’t forget!

I forgot – once – back in the day when I had to be at my grocery store job at 8 a.m. on Sundays. It was one of the rare occasions that I hadn’t been out with my friends the night before so it wasn’t as bad, just frustrating for the first 15 minutes or so when I was trying to figure out where the hell everyone else was and why no one was there to let me in!

It used to be that the time change coincided with the “monster” Halloween bashes that my former boss (and a colleague today) used to throw. For years, we used those extra hours to drink witches’ brew and howl at the moon. And it gave me an extra hour to spend as someone else like Cleopatra, a devil, Santa Claus, Catwoman or Clarence Thomas. (If you don’t know who he is, Google him and you’ll quickly get why my date was Anita Hill and a Coke can was a needed prop.) Ah, youth!

I still love the idea of getting that extra hour added to my weekend. I just think that it comes at a terrible price: having to both go to work and come home in the dark FOR MONTHS! I don’t mind one or the other; it’s the both part that kills me every year.

I guess it’s also just the compounded interest for having light so long during the summer. I’m not about to give that up. I love having light well past 8 for most of the summer. What do you think?

I'm with you. I love those long summer days, the hotter, the better! And I will hate driving to/from work in the dark all winter. Maybe I can shorten my work day?

I vote with MM - let's shorten the work days to only daylight hours.....wait, that will completely backfire on us in the summer so forget it, I will use my headlights after all!

Okay, I know I'm going to be in the minority here, but I LIKE switching back one hour - less sun, yes, but more stars and moonlight!

Gee, maybe I've got vampire blood, ya think?

Why do we still do this? Does anyone know.

I told the husband that I should just get up at regular time because the spring forward is murder on me.

I do not relish the next 4 plus months in the dark.

Everyone stock up on your vitamin D.

I agree with Mama Martha! The only thing I like even a little bit about winter is that it's still dark when I get home in the morning, so it's easier to get to sleep. And rustbeltrebel raises a good question: Why DO we still do DST?? I have no idea.

It makes no sense to me why we still do this. I reject the idea on principle. But my principles only take me so far and in practice I'll be forced to fall back.

OMG! If I had a blog I could do a whole post on this subject! ROFL! I know I tend to ramble, but here goes ...

As a kid growing up in Cincinnati, I loved it but my mom hated it! ROFL! But the school year dates & DST dates were different back then.

Moved to central Indiana after high school & didn't even have DST until 2005. It was a really big controversy for years before they finally implemented it. Indiana's got this whole screwed up mess of a time zone/DST thing going on. (http://www.infoplease.com/spot/daylight1.html)

But when it did start here, dd was only 8 y/o & trying to get her to go to bed at 8pm when it was light until almost 10pm totally sucked!

Now I wish it would just go away because even if it's only an hour difference, it tends to screw up my sleeping pattern for weeks!

When I used to cook, it messed up my cooking times. I would cook dinner when it got dark. Made those summertime meals pretty late in the evening! Now it doesn't make any difference, I don't cook!

Change the batteries in the smoke detectors too. I love the summer and the long days. Hate the dark mornings and early nights. Can't have it all . But I want it.

I don't like like to move the clock back either. I hate going to work and coming home in the dark.

Within 2 days, I can't even tell I'm getting an extra hour sleep in the morning.

MM -- Yep, here's to long summer days.

MG -- Yeah, let's not do that!

Star -- Yikes, Star!

Michele -- Yeah, me neither. But we'll sure love it come March!

Jayne, Why -- I don't know either. It's worth looking into though.

Kate -- It takes me days to adjust too!

sewwhat -- Yeah not cooking is an adjustment in and of itself!

Karen -- Really good advice!

Debbie -- Well, you're only getting the extra hour ONCE. And while that's usually a great hour to get, like you, I hate the tradeoff of coming and going in the dark!

I think there should be flexible 'sunshine' days [like the colder climates have 'snow days'] that don't count against you. Just take a day off if it's too nice to be stuck in an office all day!

What was the question???!
