The Whole World’s Gone Mad

Geez. I’ve had the TV on for an hour catching up on world events. Within the first half hour:
· They found that missing little 7 year-old-girl from Florida in a Georgia landfill.
· A 15-year-old is fighting for his life after he was set on fire following an argument – over a bicycle and a video game. The youngest suspect is 13!
· There are no suspects in the stabbing death of a 20-year-old college football star in Colorado.
· A man ran over his teen daughter and some of her friends to punish the girl who was not following family morals. Seriously? Has he never heard of "grounding?"

Good God. I guess I should be thankful that most days I don’t hear all of this stuff at once anyway.

The news and the rain are conspiring to ruin my mood. I need to turn off the TV and get off my ass and go start doing some work on the bathroom. (I’m off work, so you knew that it HAD to rain!) Means I can’t work outside so I guess I’ll try to get set up and see if I can’t paint or work on my floor or SOMETHING.

I’ll try to catch up with you guys later. (Like visiting all of you and updating comments here. It’s just been a wild couple of days!)

It is raining here too. The news is very sad. I think kids need a good paddleing. I remember going out in the hall at school and getting a paddle or two. NO beatings just a little paddle on the bottom. That is just my thought. And prayers back in school couldn't hurt.

I avoid TV news for just that reason. At least reading it on the internet I can pick & choose what I want to know about. How sad is that?

The rain managed to hold off here until late afternoon allowing me to get some yard work done. AND, inspired by your pimped shed, I figured I could at least somewhat organize the INSIDE of my 2-story monstrosity. While doing so, I kept finding what looked like little tiny poop everywhere. Sure enough, I found 3 little mice living in a cardboard box of stuff. I let them loose in the woods behind me & decided shed pimpin' is going on my to-do list for spring.

Hope you managed put a dent in your list!

The newspaper is downright depressing I tell ya! and I don't even bother trying to watch news on tv any more. I hear all I need and would want (and more than I want) online. Too many crazies out there who should NOT be parents!

Keep in mind that we are drawn to this stuff because it's emotionally charged and easily digestible. That means you can sell advertising against it. The attention span of most audiences drifts away with intellectually challenging reports. That doesn't mean that those stories are any less horrifying. It just means that in the days of real reporting and fewer cable outlets, you wouldn't have been exposed to all that in the course of a single day. It's unnatural.

And not to start anything, but I'd like to put my 2 cents worth in against prayers in school. That's not who we are and it's not who we should be.

I have to admit I havent been listening to the news latley for this one reason. I cant stand not being involved in things that are happening around me, but at the same time I have to wonder if people reporting on this kind of thing are just perpetuating the problem.

I know these problems existed a hundred years ago, but It just seemed like it was less widley accepted- I think people just like to hear about morbid happeneings, more then they like to do something about them.

My favorite movie Hotel Rwanda has a quote that I think applies to stuff like this. "I think if people see this footage, they'll say Oh, my God, that's horrible. And then they'll go on eating their dinners."

It was a great step forward in my life getting rid of my tv. No cable "news" crazies. No idiot anchors on the local news. No wasting time channel flipping.

I still can watch the 3-5 tv programs I want to watch, they're on the web. And there's netflix. And picking and choosing on the Internet news sites.

Holy crap!! I hadn't heard of any of those horrifying incidents. We don't have tv and I've been remiss about finding news online. Where did they find the girl in Georgia?

People are sick. As I said in my earlier comment, it's not going to get better though. That's kind of pessimistic, but I think it's the realism in me.
